Bitpanda Card Review: Fees, Cashback and Trading Costs

By

Bitpanda Card — Bitpanda Card

Bitpanda Card suits eurozone residents who already hold crypto on Bitpanda and want 1% back on every crypto-funded payment, with no cap and no fee for the card. The catch is that each payment is a trade at Bitpanda's usual trading fee, and stablecoin or euro payments earn nothing.

Good

  • 1% cashback with no monthly cap on crypto-funded payments
  • Free physical and virtual card, no monthly fee
  • 0% Bitpanda FX fee on non-euro payments
  • Spends crypto, precious metals or euros from one account

Watch out

  • No cashback on euro, stablecoin, metal or stock payments
  • Each crypto payment is a trade at Bitpanda's usual trading fee
  • ATM withdrawals cost 2%, with a €2 minimum
  • Only for residents of euro-area countries, not Cyprus

Bitpanda Card is a free Visa debit card that spends crypto, precious metals or euros straight from a Bitpanda account. It has no monthly fee and no Bitpanda FX fee. It pays 1% cashback with no monthly cap, but only on payments funded with crypto, so payments from euros or stablecoins earn nothing.

When you pay, Bitpanda sells the asset you've picked for euros on the spot and settles the payment from your euro balance. You choose which asset the card spends, and you can set a fallback asset so a payment isn't declined when the first one runs out.

Bitpanda Card cashback

Bitpanda Card pays 1% cashback with no monthly cap on every payment funded with crypto, and nothing on payments funded any other way.

The lack of a cap is the strong point: spend €1,000 a month from Bitcoin or Ether and you get €10 back, and €4,000 gets you €40. Many free crypto cards stop paying after a few hundred euros a month.

The exclusions matter just as much. Bitpanda excludes payments made from your euro balance, Bitpanda Stocks, precious metals and stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, and some merchant categories don't qualify. If you mostly hold stablecoins to spend, the Bitpanda Card pays you nothing.

Bitpanda Card fees

Bitpanda Card has no card fee, no monthly fee and no Bitpanda FX fee, but every crypto-funded payment is a trade that pays Bitpanda's usual trading fee.

That trading fee is the cost to watch. Bitpanda says each card payment from crypto is traded to euros "incurring the usual trading fee" but doesn't publish a card-specific percentage. Paying from your euro balance avoids the trade, but also earns no cashback.

For payments in other currencies, Bitpanda adds 0% FX fee, though Visa's own exchange rate and mark-up still apply.

The physical card and up to three virtual cards are free. Bitpanda charges €5.90 to reissue a card and €9.90 to replace one that's lost or damaged, according to its card page.

Bitpanda Card ATM withdrawal fees

Bitpanda Card charges 2% per ATM withdrawal with a €2 minimum, and there's no free monthly allowance.

A €200 withdrawal costs €4 and a €50 withdrawal costs the €2 minimum, which is 4%. Because of that minimum, fewer and larger withdrawals cost less: five €40 withdrawals cost €10 in total, while one €200 withdrawal costs €4. Withdrawals are limited to €500 a day. If the cash comes from crypto, the trading fee applies too, and the ATM owner may add a charge.

Is Bitpanda Card safe?

Bitpanda Card is custodial: the crypto, metals and euros you spend are held in your Bitpanda account, and Bitpanda controls them.

The card itself is issued by Transact Payments Malta Limited under a Visa Europe licence. Transact Payments Malta is authorised and regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority, according to Bitpanda's card page.

As with any custodial account, your balance depends on Bitpanda staying solvent and secure. Keeping only what you plan to spend in the account limits that exposure.

Who should get Bitpanda Card

Bitpanda Card suits eurozone residents who already hold Bitcoin or other volatile crypto on Bitpanda and want to spend it with 1% back and no cap.

The uncapped 1% makes it more rewarding for heavy spenders than most free cards, as long as the trading fee on each payment stays low. Apple Pay and Google Pay both work, so a free virtual card added to your phone is enough to start paying in shops before the physical card arrives. Before switching, check what Bitpanda charges to trade the asset you plan to spend. A trading fee of 1% or more on each payment would cancel the cashback entirely, and the card would then cost more than a plain euro debit card.

If you spend stablecoins or euros, a card that rewards those balances will pay more. The comparison below shows the strongest alternatives in your country.
