MetaMask Card Review: Fees, Cashback and the Metal Card

MetaMask Card โ€” Virtual

Virtual

MetaMask Card suits self-custody users in Europe and the Americas who want 1% back with no fee and no cap, spending straight from their wallet. The only option now is a virtual card, because the $199 Metal card has been paused since June 2026.

Good

  • 1% back in mUSD with no monthly cap on the free virtual card
  • Spends from your own wallet, so you keep the keys until you pay
  • No token fee on a stablecoin in your local currency
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay in all 45 countries

Watch out

  • Metal card orders have been paused since June 2, 2026
  • 1% cross-border fee on any merchant outside your country
  • ATM withdrawals cost 2% with no free allowance on the virtual card
  • New sign-ups are closed in the US and the UK

MetaMask Card is a self-custody Mastercard that spends stablecoins and wETH directly from a MetaMask wallet. The virtual card is free, pays 1% back in mUSD with no cap and charges 1% when the merchant is outside your country. The $199 Metal card, which paid 3%, has been paused since June 2026.

MetaMask runs the card as three regional programs with slightly different token fees. Europe has a euro stablecoin, EURe, which euro-area cardholders can spend with no token fee. In Canada and Latin America, dollar stablecoins carry a 0.5% fee, except in Argentina, which has its own program with no such fee. Pick your country at the top of the page and every table below shows the terms for that program.

MetaMask Card cashback

MetaMask Card pays 1% back in mUSD on the free virtual card, with no monthly cap, and the paused Metal card paid 3% on the first $10,000 of spending each year.

The virtual card's 1% applies to all spending with no tier to reach. At $1,000 a month that's $10, or $120 a year, paid in mUSD, MetaMask's own dollar stablecoin.

Metal cost $199 a year, and its 3% stopped after $10,000 of spending a year, about $833 a month, dropping to 1% after that. The extra 2% on $10,000 is worth $200, so the rewards alone cover the fee by just $1. Metal only made sense with its other perks: no cross-border fee and $1,200 a month of free ATM withdrawals.

Metal orders have been paused since June 2, 2026, according to MetaMask's support centre.

MetaMask Card fees

MetaMask Card has no annual fee on the virtual card, but charges a 1% cross-border fee when the merchant is outside your country and a token fee that depends on what you spend.

The cross-border fee follows the merchant's location, not the currency. A cardholder in Germany pays 1% in a French shop, even though both sides use euros, and 1% on a dollar purchase from a US website.

Token fees are where your choice of asset matters. A stablecoin in your local currency is free, so EURe costs nothing for a cardholder in the euro area. A stablecoin in neither your currency nor the merchant's costs 0.5%, which is why dollar stablecoins carry 0.5% in most of the Americas, with Argentina exempt. DeFi and yield tokens are free up to $1,200 a month and 0.5% after that, while other crypto, such as wETH, costs 0.875%.

The virtual card's spending limit is $15,000 a day. The card works with tokens on Linea, Solana, Monad and Base.

MetaMask Card ATM withdrawal fees

MetaMask Card charges 2% on every ATM withdrawal from the virtual card, with no free monthly allowance.

A $200 withdrawal costs $4 in MetaMask's fee, and the ATM owner may add a charge on top. The virtual card can withdraw up to $1,000 a day.

The paused Metal card had free withdrawals up to $1,200 a month, then 2%, with a $5,000 daily limit. For someone taking out $1,200 a month, that saved $24 a month compared with the virtual card.

Is MetaMask Card safe?

MetaMask Card is a self-custody card: your stablecoins or wETH stay in your own MetaMask wallet, and you hold the keys until the moment you pay.

Self-custody changes the main risk, because no exchange holds a balance for you, so an exchange failure or freeze doesn't reach your funds. In return, the wallet is your responsibility. Anyone with your recovery phrase can empty it, and nobody can restore it for you if it's lost.

The card still needs an identity check before you can use it. It spends tokens held on Linea, Solana, Monad or Base, so the funds you want to spend have to sit on one of those networks.

Who should get MetaMask Card

MetaMask Card suits people who already keep stablecoins in a MetaMask wallet and want 1% back on everyday spending without moving funds to an exchange.

In the euro area it works best with EURe, which has no token fee, so domestic spending costs nothing and returns 1%. Frequent travellers and online shoppers should count the 1% cross-border fee, which cancels the cashback on every foreign merchant.

With Metal paused, there's no way to earn more than 1%. The comparison below shows the strongest alternatives in your country.
