PlasBit Card Review: Fees, Cashback and FX Costs

By

PlasBit Card — Virtual

PlasBit Card suits people who keep crypto on PlasBit and want a free virtual Visa in euros or dollars for online and phone payments. It pays no cashback, and the plastic card that withdraws cash is on a waiting list.

Good

  • Free virtual card with no monthly fee
  • 0% fee to load the card from your PlasBit wallet
  • Loads from BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, TRX and 100+ other coins
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay supported

Watch out

  • No cashback on any card
  • 1.5% FX fee on payments in other currencies
  • New plastic and metal cards are paused, with a waiting list
  • Not available in the US, Brazil, Japan or China

PlasBit Card is a Visa debit card in euros or dollars that you load with crypto from a PlasBit wallet. The virtual card is free to issue, has no monthly fee and charges 0% to load, but payments in other currencies cost 1.5%. The card pays no cashback, and its plastic version is on a waiting list.

PlasBit offers four reloadable cards: a virtual and a plastic card in euros, and the same pair in dollars. The euro and dollar cards have the same fees, so the sensible choice is the currency you spend in most, and the figures in this review use the euro card.

PlasBit Card cashback

PlasBit Card pays no cashback on any of its cards, whether virtual or plastic, in euros or in dollars.

The card is built around low running costs instead of rewards. It's free to hold and free to load, so its value comes from turning crypto into spending money cheaply, and the trade-off is that nothing comes back on what you spend.

If you spend a lot by card, that difference adds up. A card paying 1% returns €20 a month on €2,000 of spending, money a PlasBit cardholder doesn't get.

PlasBit Card fees

PlasBit Card has no issuance fee, no monthly fee and a 0% loading fee, so the main cost is a 1.5% FX fee on payments in another currency.

You load the card from your PlasBit wallet with Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, USDC, TRX or more than 100 other coins, with a minimum load of $10. The crypto is converted into euros or dollars when you load, and PlasBit doesn't publish the exchange rate margin it applies on that conversion.

The FX fee matters if you travel or shop from foreign stores. With the euro card, a $100 purchase in the US costs about 1.5% extra, and the same goes for paying in euros with the dollar card, which is why picking the right card currency saves money.

Disputes are the one fee that can surprise you. PlasBit charges €25 for a chargeback on the euro cards and $25 on the dollar cards.

PlasBit Card ATM withdrawal fees

PlasBit Card supports ATM withdrawals only on the plastic card, which is free up to €200 a month and costs 2% after that.

The virtual card, the only one open to new customers right now, can't withdraw cash. PlasBit has paused new plastic and metal cards because of demand and offers a waiting list. Once you have a plastic card, a €300 withdrawal in a month would cost €2 in PlasBit fees, before any charge from the ATM owner.

Cash withdrawals aren't supported.

Is PlasBit Card safe?

PlasBit Card is custodial: your crypto sits in a PlasBit wallet, and PlasBit holds it until you load the card.

PlasBit LTD is registered in Canada as a money services business with FINTRAC and as a payment service provider under Canada's Retail Payment Activities Act. The reloadable cards are issued through Wirex's card platform, and PlasBit says its card partner is a licensed financial institution in Estonia.

PlasBit says it keeps all customer crypto in multi-signature cold storage, backed one to one and checked by monthly proof-of-reserves audits. Even with those safeguards, it's wise to hold only spending money on any exchange, PlasBit included.

Who should get PlasBit Card

PlasBit Card suits people who already hold crypto on PlasBit, or who own smaller coins that many card providers don't accept, and want a free virtual Visa for online shopping and phone payments.

The free issuance, 0% loading fee and lack of a monthly fee make it cheap to keep as a second card. For payments abroad, the 1.5% FX fee is lower than the 2% many crypto cards charge, though it still costs €15 on €1,000 of foreign spending.

Heavy spenders will get more from a card that pays cashback, and anyone who needs cash should wait for the plastic card to return. The comparison below shows the strongest alternatives in your country.
