Xapo Bank Card Review: Fees, Cashback and the $1,000 Membership

Xapo Bank Card — Membership

Xapo Bank Card suits people who want a Gibraltar-regulated bank account for dollars and bitcoin and will use the membership's other services. At $1,000 a year with no standing cashback, the card alone doesn't justify the fee.

Good

  • No Xapo fee on card payments in dollars or foreign currencies
  • Free metal card and one free replacement a year
  • First $100 of ATM withdrawals each month is free
  • Xapo Bank Limited is a licensed credit institution in Gibraltar

Watch out

  • Requires a membership costing $1,000 a year
  • No standing cashback on card spending
  • ATM withdrawals above $100 a month cost 2%
  • Extra card replacements cost $25, emergency ones $100

Xapo Bank Card is a metal debit card that comes with a Xapo Bank membership, which costs $1,000 a year. It spends from a dollar account, charges no Xapo fee on foreign-currency payments and gives you $100 of free ATM withdrawals a month, but it pays no standing cashback.

Xapo Bank is a Gibraltar bank that holds both US dollars and bitcoin. The card is one part of the membership, alongside the account itself and a dedicated relationship manager. Judge the $1,000 fee on the whole package, because the card on its own earns nothing back.

Xapo Bank Card cashback

Xapo Bank Card has no standing cashback: its single Membership plan pays 0% on everyday spending.

Xapo Bank has run time-limited promotions instead. The most recent paid 3% back on taxi, limousine and ride-hailing payments made with an active Metal card between July 1 and September 30, 2026. That promotion has ended, and Xapo hasn't announced a replacement.

For comparison with other cards, the fee is the number that matters. $1,000 a year is about $83 a month before you spend anything. A free card paying 1% would need $100,000 of yearly spending to earn the same amount.

Xapo Bank Card fees

Xapo Bank Card has no Xapo fee on card payments in dollars or in foreign currencies, according to Xapo Bank's fee schedule, but the membership behind it costs $1,000 a year.

The fee schedule lists card payments in US dollars and in other currencies at $0, noting that merchants or operators may add their own charges. That makes the card cheap to use abroad once the membership is paid. Against a card with a 2% FX fee, you'd need $50,000 of foreign spending a year before the FX savings covered the $1,000.

Xapo's fee schedule lists a 0.29% spread on bitcoin exchanges but no separate fee for card payments made from bitcoin, so spending from the dollar balance is the simplest way to use the card.

The metal card is free, and so is the first replacement each year. Further replacements cost $25, a replacement for a closed card costs $25, and an emergency replacement costs $100 plus shipping.

Xapo Bank Card ATM withdrawal fees

Xapo Bank Card withdrawals are free up to $100 a month, then cost 2% of each amount above that.

The allowance is small, so a single $200 withdrawal costs $2 in Xapo fees (2% on the $100 above the allowance) and a $500 withdrawal costs $8. The ATM owner may add its own charge either way.

For someone who uses cash a few times a month, the 2% rate is reasonable. If you need several hundred dollars in cash every week, the fee adds up faster than the allowance helps.

Is Xapo Bank Card safe?

Xapo Bank Card is custodial: Xapo Bank holds your dollars and bitcoin.

Xapo Bank Limited is regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission as a credit institution (Permission Number 23171). Crypto services are provided by a separate company, Xapo VASP Limited, also regulated by the commission (Permission Number 26061).

According to Xapo Bank, bitcoin is held 1:1, legally segregated under Gibraltar's DLT framework, and never lent or rehypothecated. Keys are protected with MPC-CMP custody, so the full private key never exists in one place. Crypto deposits are not covered by the Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

Who should get Xapo Bank Card

Xapo Bank Card suits people who want a regulated bank account for both dollars and bitcoin and will use what the membership includes beyond the card.

If you hold a large dollar or bitcoin balance and value a licensed bank, a relationship manager and fee-free spending abroad, the $1,000 a year buys a package that crypto exchange cards don't offer.

Interest on savings is part of that maths. Xapo's membership page lists 4.6% APY on USD savings for the first 90 days, paid daily in bitcoin, then a variable 4.1%. At 4.1%, about $24,400 in savings earns $1,000 a year, enough to cover the membership. Xapo notes the rates can change at any time.

If you want a crypto card for cashback or low running costs, the numbers don't work. The fee is $83 a month, and the card pays nothing back on everyday spending. The comparison below shows cheaper alternatives in your country.
