CoinZoom Visa Card Review: Fees, Cashback and ZOOM Tiers

CoinZoom Visa Card — Non-Prime

Non-Prime

CoinZoom Visa Card suits people who already hold a large ZOOM balance, since 5% back on the Black tier leaves a real margin after the 1.49% crypto conversion fee. On the free Non-Prime tier the card pays 0.5% in ZOOM, which doesn't cover that fee when you spend crypto.

Good

  • Up to 5% back in ZOOM on the Black tier, with no monthly cap
  • No annual fee on any of the five tiers
  • No CoinZoom fee on ATM withdrawals at home or abroad
  • No CoinZoom foreign transaction fee on non-dollar payments

Watch out

  • Every crypto-funded payment carries a 1.49% conversion fee
  • Black tier needs 300,000 ZOOM held in your account
  • Rewards are paid in ZOOM, CoinZoom's own token
  • Residents of the EU, UK, Canada and Australia can't order it

CoinZoom Visa Card is a crypto debit card from the US exchange CoinZoom that has no annual fee and pays 0.5% to 5% back in ZOOM tokens, depending on how much ZOOM you hold. Spending crypto costs 1.49% per payment, so the reward only beats the fee on the higher tiers.

The card spends in US dollars from whichever wallet you pick in the app, either a dollar balance or a coin such as BTC or USDC that CoinZoom sells at the moment you pay. Everyone gets the same Visa card and fees, and the five tiers differ only in rewards, shipping and limits.

CoinZoom Visa Card cashback

CoinZoom Visa Card pays 0.5% back in ZOOM on the free Non-Prime tier and up to 5% on the Black tier, with tiers set by the number of ZOOM tokens in your account.

Silver needs 10,000 ZOOM and pays 1%, Gold needs 50,000 for 2%, Diamond needs 150,000 for 3%, and Black needs 300,000 for 5%. You only have to hold the tokens, so you can sell them at any time and drop a tier, and there's no subscription or yearly renewal.

The rates apply to most purchase categories with no monthly cap, although ATM withdrawals, money orders, tax payments, charities and a few financial categories earn nothing, and some categories stop earning after $5,000 in a rolling 30 days. CoinZoom's own example puts $500 a month on a Gold card at $120 a year, and the same spending on Black at $300.

Rewards arrive as ZOOM, so their value moves with the token's price. Reaching Black also means keeping a large position in that same token, which is a risk worth weighing before chasing 5%.

CoinZoom Visa Card fees

CoinZoom Visa Card has no annual fee on any tier, but every payment funded with crypto pays a 1.49% conversion fee.

That fee is the cost of CoinZoom selling your coins for dollars at the till, and it changes the maths on the lower tiers. On Non-Prime, a $1,000 month of crypto spending earns $5 in ZOOM and costs $14.90 in conversion fees, while on Gold the 2% reward only clears the fee by about half a percent. If you keep a dollar balance in CoinZoom and spend that, the conversion fee doesn't apply.

The card is billed in US dollars, and CoinZoom doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee, so payments in other currencies are converted at Visa's rate. That is useful for cardholders outside the US, since almost every purchase they make is in a currency other than the dollar.

The virtual card is free and ready as soon as your account is approved. A physical card costs $5 in standard shipping on Non-Prime, paid in ZOOM, and ships free on Silver and above, while expedited delivery costs $12 in the US and $60 to other countries.

CoinZoom Visa Card ATM withdrawal fees

CoinZoom Visa Card withdrawals are free of CoinZoom fees at home and abroad, so the only costs are the 1.49% conversion fee on crypto and any charge from the ATM owner.

Taking $200 out of a crypto balance therefore costs about $2.98 in conversion plus whatever the machine charges, and taking it from a dollar balance costs nothing from CoinZoom. Daily ATM limits are low on the lower tiers and rise with your ZOOM holdings.

Is CoinZoom Visa Card safe?

CoinZoom Visa Card is custodial: your coins and dollars sit in your CoinZoom account, and CoinZoom sells crypto on your behalf whenever you pay.

The card is issued by Zenus Bank, with CoinZoom, Inc. as program manager, and CoinZoom is registered with FinCEN as a money services business and licensed as a money transmitter in the states where it holds a licence. In other US states, customer dollars are held in custodial accounts at Cross River Bank. As with any exchange card, it makes sense to keep only what you plan to spend in the account.

Who should get CoinZoom Visa Card

CoinZoom Visa Card makes sense for people who already hold 150,000 ZOOM or more, because 3% or 5% back leaves a clear gap over the 1.49% conversion fee.

It also works for cardholders who keep a dollar balance in CoinZoom, since dollar spending avoids the conversion fee and still earns the tier's reward. The free ATM withdrawals and the absence of an FX fee help travellers outside the US.

For anyone who would spend crypto on the Non-Prime or Silver tier, the fee is larger than the reward, so another card will cost less. The comparison below shows the alternatives in your country.
