Deblock Card Review: Fees, Cashback and the Premium Plan

Deblock Card — Standard

Standard

Deblock Card suits people in Europe who want a free euro Visa tied to a self-custody crypto wallet, with low FX costs up to €1,000 a month. The free Standard plan pays no cashback and charges 1.99% to sell crypto, so Premium at €120 a year is where the rewards are.

Good

  • Free Standard plan with no FX fee on the first €1,000 a month
  • Crypto sits in a self-custody wallet Deblock can't move
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay on every virtual and physical card
  • Licensed as an e-money institution by France's ACPR

Watch out

  • No cashback on the free Standard plan
  • Selling crypto to spend costs 1.99% on Standard
  • Standard's free ATM allowance is one withdrawal or €100 a month
  • Premium costs €120 a year for cashback of up to 1%

Deblock Card is a free Visa debit card from Deblock, a French e-money institution, that spends from a euro account linked to a self-custody crypto wallet. The free Standard plan pays no cashback. Premium costs €120 a year and lists cashback of up to 1%, along with lower crypto fees and free foreign-currency payments.

Deblock Card is a single euro program for residents of the European Economic Area. Payments are made from your euro balance, and crypto has to be sold into that balance before you can spend it.

Deblock Card cashback

Deblock Card pays no cashback on the free Standard plan, and up to 1% on the Premium plan, which costs €14.99 a month or €120 a year.

Deblock's fee page lists Premium cashback as "up to 1%" and doesn't publish the conditions or a monthly cap, so 1% is the most Premium pays. At 1%, Premium pays for itself only once you spend €1,000 a month, which earns €120 a year and matches the annual fee. Below that, the plan costs more in fees than it returns in cashback.

Cashback isn't the main reason to pay for Premium. The plan also cuts the crypto trading fee from 1.99% to 0.49%, removes the foreign-currency fee (under conditions) and raises the free ATM allowance. Someone who sells €500 of crypto a month saves €7.50 a month on trading fees alone.

Deblock Card fees

Deblock Card has no monthly fee on Standard, euro card payments are free on every plan, and the main costs are the 1.99% crypto trading fee and a foreign-currency fee above €1,000 a month.

On Standard, payments in other currencies are free up to €1,000 per calendar month. Above that, Deblock charges 0.5% on weekdays and 1% on weekends (Paris time). Premium removes this fee, under conditions set by Deblock.

Spending crypto takes one extra step, because the card draws only on your euro balance and you have to sell crypto into it first. On Standard, buying, selling or swapping crypto costs 1.99%, so spending €100 of bitcoin costs about €1.99, while Premium charges 0.49%.

A 0.5% fee applies on every plan to card payments with gambling, crypto, money-transfer, prepaid top-up or jewellery merchants. Topping up the account by card is free up to €2,000 a month, then 0.5%.

Deblock Card ATM withdrawal fees

Deblock Card's Standard plan includes one free euro withdrawal or €100 per rolling month, whichever comes first, then charges 1% with a €1 minimum per withdrawal.

The €1 minimum makes small withdrawals expensive, since a second €50 withdrawal in the same month costs €1, which is 2%. Premium raises the allowance to three withdrawals or €1,000 a month, with the same 1% fee afterwards.

The ATM owner may add its own charge. Deblock's card page says it adds no FX fee on ATM withdrawals abroad, with limits that depend on your plan.

Is Deblock Card safe?

Deblock Card spends from a euro e-money account that Deblock safeguards, while your crypto sits in a separate non-custodial wallet that Deblock can't access.

Deblock SAS is based in Lille and holds two French licences. The ACPR licenses it as an electronic money institution, and the AMF licenses it as a crypto-asset service provider. Deblock says it's a direct Visa member, so it issues the card itself.

The euro balance is held in client money accounts separate from Deblock's own funds. If Deblock became insolvent, those accounts would be used to repay customers before other creditors. Deblock's terms note that a court could still rule against that treatment.

The crypto wallet is provided by Techblock Ltd. According to Deblock's terms, only you know the private keys, and Deblock can't move the assets. The same terms make keeping those keys and credentials safe your responsibility.

Who should get Deblock Card

Deblock Card suits people in the EEA who want a euro debit card and a self-custody crypto wallet in one app, and who spend less than €1,000 a month in foreign currencies.

Standard is a good free travel card at that level, since non-euro payments cost nothing until the €1,000 limit. It's a poor choice for cashback, and selling crypto to spend costs 1.99% each time.

Premium makes sense only if you spend at least €1,000 a month by card or trade crypto regularly. The comparison below shows the strongest alternatives in your country.
