Nexa Card is a reloadable prepaid card that you can fund with crypto, cash, wires or bank transfers and spend online or in shops. The virtual Silver card costs $55.90 upfront and $3.99 a month, the plastic Black card costs $109.95 upfront and $11.95 a month, and no Nexa card pays cashback.
Nexa sells three cards: the virtual Silver, the plastic Black and the metal Platinum. All three need no credit check and no bank account, and the virtual card number arrives by email within 24 hours of signing up.
Nexa Card cashback
Nexa Card pays no cashback, points or other rewards on any of its three cards.
The cards differ in format and price, not in what they pay back. Moving from Silver to Black gets you a plastic card you can use at a till, and Platinum swaps the plastic for metal, but the reward rate stays at zero on all of them.
Nexa's whitepaper sketches a future system of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers for people who hold or stake its NEXA token, with cashback attached. No rates or dates have been published for it, so for now the card earns nothing back on everyday spending.
Nexa Card fees
Nexa Card charges an enrollment fee, an activation fee and a monthly hosting fee, which makes it one of the more expensive ways to get a crypto-funded card.
The virtual Silver card costs $49.95 to enroll and $5.95 to activate, which is $55.90 upfront, then $3.99 a month. Over the first year that adds up to $103.78 before you spend anything, and $47.88 a year after that.
The plastic Black card costs $99.95 to enroll and $10 to activate, which is $109.95 upfront, then $11.95 a month. Its first year costs $253.35, and every year after that costs $143.40 in hosting alone.
Nexa doesn't publish the fees for spending crypto, paying in a foreign currency or using an ATM. Its FAQ says ATM withdrawals, international transactions and card replacements can carry fees and points to a fee schedule, so read that schedule in your account before loading a large amount.
Nexa Card ATM withdrawal fees
Nexa Card has no published ATM fee, although the Nexa FAQ lists ATM withdrawals among the transactions that carry a charge.
Only the Black and Platinum cards are physical, so the virtual Silver card can't be used at a machine at all. If you need regular cash from crypto, a card with a published ATM fee and a free monthly allowance will be easier to plan around.
Is Nexa Card safe?
Nexa Card is custodial: once you load it, your money sits on a prepaid balance held by Nexa and its card issuer until you spend it.
Nexa doesn't name the bank or e-money company that issues its cards, and the terms linked from its sign-up page are general website terms that don't describe the card account. That leaves no published cardholder agreement setting out what happens to your balance if something goes wrong.
The company behind the card, Nexa Cards Solutions LLC, is also running a presale for its own NEXA token on Ethereum, and its press releases tie the token to future card rewards and fee discounts. The card and the token are sold separately, with the card priced in US dollars.
Nexa publishes no protections for card balances, so load only what you plan to spend in the next few weeks.
Who should get Nexa Card
Nexa Card suits people who hold less common cryptocurrencies, want to load them straight onto a card, and have no bank account or credit history to open one elsewhere.
Support for more than 65 cryptocurrencies is wider than most crypto cards manage, and the option to load cash or wires as well makes the card usable for payroll or business payouts. The $150,000 maximum per load on the physical cards leaves room for large balances.
For anyone with a bank account, the costs are hard to justify. The Silver card's $103.78 first-year cost buys a card with no cashback, while many crypto cards are free to open and pay something back. The comparison below shows cheaper options in your country.
Where Nexa Card is available
Nexa Card is sold online through the Nexa website, and Nexa says its cards are accepted at more than 33 million merchant locations.
Nexa doesn't publish a list of countries it serves or excludes. The sign-up form asks only for a name, email address and password, so the quickest way to check your country is to start an account and see whether a card can be ordered.
