Volet Card Review: Fees, Cashback and Card Options

By

Volet Card — Digital

Volet Card suits people who get paid in crypto and want a prepaid card that turns USDT, BTC or other coins into dollars or euros they can spend. It pays no cashback and stacks a monthly fee, a load fee and a high FX fee, so it's an expensive card for everyday spending.

Good

  • Virtual Europe card costs €1 to create, plastic costs €5
  • BTC and ETH top-ups convert to fiat with no Volet fee
  • Digital card works in Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Asia-Pacific card for 10 countries most crypto cards skip

Watch out

  • No cashback on any card
  • Monthly fee on every card, from $1 to $2
  • 2.95% FX fee in Europe and 3.5% in Asia-Pacific
  • Europe and Asia-Pacific cards don't support Apple Pay or Google Pay

Volet Card is a family of prepaid cards from Volet.com, a crypto and fiat e-wallet, that you load in dollars or euros after topping up your wallet with crypto. Cards cost 1 to 5 to issue plus 1 to 2 a month, and none of them pay cashback. Which card you get depends on where you live.

Volet runs three card programs: the Digital card is a virtual Visa in dollars for most of the world, the Europe card comes in euros or dollars as a virtual or plastic card, and the Asia-Pacific card is a plastic dollar Mastercard. Pick your country at the top of the page and every table below shows the terms for your card.

Volet Card cashback

Volet Card doesn't pay cashback, points or token rewards on any of its three cards.

That makes the card a pure spending tool. Its job is to turn a crypto balance into money you can spend at a shop, and every fee below is a cost with nothing coming back to offset it. For anyone comparing on rewards, almost any card with a free plan and 1% back will beat Volet over a year.

Volet Card fees

Volet Card charges a monthly fee, a fee each time you load the card from your wallet, and an FX fee on payments in another currency, and all three vary by card.

The Europe card costs 1 EUR or USD a month, which is 12 a year, and each load costs 1% plus 1 EUR or USD. Loading €500 costs €6, so a few large loads work out cheaper than many small ones. The Asia-Pacific card also costs $1 a month, with a load fee of 1.5% plus $1.

The Digital card costs $2 a month, or $24 a year, and loading it costs a percentage of the amount plus $1. Payments in dollars carry no fee, and payments in other currencies are converted at Visa's rate with no Volet markup.

The FX fee is where the Europe and Asia-Pacific cards get expensive. The Europe card charges 2.95% on payments outside its currency, and the Asia-Pacific card charges 3.5%, so a $1,000 hotel bill in another currency costs $35 extra on the Asia-Pacific card.

Getting crypto into your wallet is cheap. Volet charges nothing to convert BTC, ETH and most other coins to a fiat balance, and a flat $1 for USDT and USDC deposits.

Volet Card ATM withdrawal fees

Volet Card charges a flat fee per ATM withdrawal on its plastic cards: 1.99 inside the EU and 2.99 outside it on the Europe card, in the card's currency.

The Asia-Pacific card charges $2.99 per withdrawal, or $1.99 in Australia. A flat fee hurts most on small withdrawals, so taking out €200 at once costs about 1% in the EU, while €20 costs almost 10%.

The Digital card works at contactless ATMs that accept it, but Volet doesn't publish an ATM fee for it. The ATM owner may add its own charge on any card.

Is Volet Card safe?

Volet Card is custodial: your crypto and fiat sit in your Volet.com account, and the card balance is held by the card issuer.

Volet.com has run its payment platform since 2014 and says it has issued crypto-friendly cards since 2015. The cards are issued by licensed financial institutions that Volet doesn't name. Volet says it is PCI DSS certified and uses two-factor authentication and hardware-encrypted servers.

Because the issuer isn't named, it's harder to check who protects the card balance. That is a reason to load only what you plan to spend soon.

Who should get Volet Card

Volet Card suits freelancers and traders who receive crypto and need to spend it somewhere most crypto cards don't reach, such as the ten Asia-Pacific countries covered by its plastic card or the many countries the Digital card serves.

For spending in the card's own currency the costs are manageable: about 1% to load in Europe plus €12 a year. For travel or online shopping in other currencies, the 2.95% and 3.5% FX fees make Volet one of the more expensive options, and the comparison below is worth a look first.
